Tooth Cavities & Tooth Decay

Everyone wants to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile! Unfortunately, most of us will have to deal with cavities and tooth decay at some point in our lives. At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC we offer preventive and restorative to combat instances of decay. With the proper education and treatment, we can help you significantly reduce your chances of developing decay. The following information is designed to help you maintain your best possible smile!

What is a Cavity?

Most patients are familiar with cavities, or a defect that is left in the tooth. Cavities are the result of tooth decay that is left untreated for an extended period. Your teeth are covered by a hard material known as enamel. Once the enamel is weakened by the acids in bacteria, a cavity will form in the surface of your tooth.

Why do I get Cavities?

Cavities and tooth decay are also known as dental caries. They can be caused by a combination of factors, namely the harmful bacteria found in dental plaque. Plaque is a thin biofilm that is constantly forming on and around your teeth. The bacteria found in plaque feed on the sugars and other simple carbohydrates we consume on a daily basis. As they feed, they produce acids that eat away at the enamel.

How can I Prevent Cavities?

Regular brushing and flossing can help eliminate plaque and reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Regular appointments and professional cleanings are also an important part of diagnosing tooth decay and eliminating plaque. Finally, be sure to maintain a healthy and balanced diet that limits your exposure to sugar and starches. Products containing fluoride can also help to protect you from tooth decay and cavities. Fluoride supplements the weaker areas of your teeth with minerals that help rebuild the enamel.

How do I get my Cavity Fixed?

The most effective and common form of treatment for cavities and decay are dental fillings. A filling is used to plug a space, protect the tooth, and prevent further decay. If you are experiencing any signs or symptoms of decay, be sure to contact us immediately. If the decay or damage is too severe for a filling, we may recommend a dental crown. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over the visible portion of a tooth. During the dental crown procedure, Dr. Perkiomaki will completely reshape the enamel and make an impression. The impression is used to fabricate your new dental crown. After you receive the crown, your tooth should be protected from further decay. Be sure to maintain excellent oral health and routine appointments. If you do not, you may experience complications.

What if I don’t get my Cavities Fixed?

As the decay develops, the bacteria and acids will continue to damage your tooth. Eventually, this may lead to problems with the innermost part of your tooth, known as the pulp. This may constitute the need for a root canal. After you receive a root canal, you will need a dental crown to protect the tooth.
