Dental Implants and Dentures Comparison
At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC we understand how hard it can be to lose teeth, which is why we provide so many great ways to replace your teeth. Two of the most popular tooth replacement options are dental implants and dentures, but how are you supposed to make an educated decision between the two? At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC, we believe in educating our patients on all procedures that they will undergo before they choose to have the procedure done. This way you know what you are getting into before you pull the trigger. Below we discuss some of the pros and cons of both dental implants and dentures.
Dental implants are a great way to permanently replace your teeth with a fixed prosthetic device. The implant post is made of titanium, which fuses to the bone in your jaw through a process known as osseointegration.

The Pros of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer a permanent, hassle-free tooth replacement option for single teeth, multiple teeth, even a full arch of missing teeth
. Patients who experience tooth loss often suffer from bone loss
in their jaw because when their teeth go missing the bone will start to deteriorate. When we surgically place a dental implant into the jaw, they can restore the health of the bone in the jaw over the long term, resulting in a long-term health benefit. Dental implants act just like your real teeth and never have to be removed.
The Cons of Dental Implants
Dental implants require a surgical procedure to be placed, meaning the recovery time can be substantial. It can take anywhere from two to six month to fully recover from dental implant placement procedures. Further, because dental implants require a complicated surgical placement, they can result in a large up-front cost. Over the long run, the benefits of dental implants outweigh the up-front cost.
DenturesDentures are a tooth replacement option that has been re-imagined, refined, and perfected over the course of dental history. Dentures are a removable tooth replacement option that restores the ability of the patient to eat and speak as they did before their tooth loss.
The Pros of Dentures
Dentures offer our patients a quick and easy way to replace their teeth with something that will give them an immediate and measurable benefit. Feeling confident about your appearance and being able to eat the foods that you enjoy at a reasonable price is a huge benefit. Dentures only take a few weeks to create before you get to use them.
The Cons of Dentures
Dentures must be held in place by denture adhesives
throughout the day. Sometimes these adhesives will fail and need to be re-applied halfway through the day. Because dentures are held in place by nothing but adhesives, you will be limited to what you can eat. Things like apples and sticky foods (caramels) will be very difficult to eat with dentures
. Dentures must be removed to be cleaned, and while you sleep. They must be stored in either water or a denture soaking solution overnight. Dentures can stop fitting correctly and will need to be replaced occasionally.
