Dental Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and Onlays are sometimes referred to as an indirect filling. It is one option for repair of a damaged tooth. At Jukka J. Perkiomaki, DMD, we offer Inlays and Onlays when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but not damaged enough for a crown. This is common with chipped or cracked teeth. Inlays and Onlays can be a less expensive treatment than a dental crown, but offer you strength that you can not get with a filling. They help strengthen your natural tooth structure by up to 75%, unlike traditional metal fillings which can actually reduce the strength of the tooth by up to 50%. This strength has been shown to prolong the need for further restoration to that tooth significantly.
Inlays and Onlays are similar in function, but used differently.
Inlays are similar to a dental filling, they are used to fill the inside of a tooth structure using a stronger material than a traditional filling, offering you a stronger, more permanent solution. We commonly use gold or a porcelain material for this procedure.
Dental OnlaysSometimes referred to as a partial crown, Onlays cover the outside of a broken tooth structure. Onlays are very durable and can last for a long period of time. Instead of a crown, which encases the entire tooth, onlays cover the damaged outside portion of the tooth.
