What are Dental Implants?

If you have a broken or fractured natural tooth, or if you are missing one or multiple teeth, dental implants can be used to replace them! These days, patients who have experienced tooth loss have several restorative options to consider, and dental implants are typically the best long-term solution. At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC, we are strong supporters of dental implant treatment. Dental implants have revolutionized the way we treat tooth loss. In fact, they have become the gold standard of tooth replacement throughout our industry. Our office works with a team of oral surgeons and periodontists to provide the very best in implant services. While other dentists decide to place the implants themselves, we utilize the expertise of a highly-skilled and well-trained team of professionals.

The Parts of a Dental Implant

A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that is surgically attached to the jawbone. After a brief healing period, Dr. Perkiomaki will attach the dental implant or implants to a final restoration.

Types of Dental Implant Restorations

Thanks to advancements in technology and techniques, implants can be used to support a single dental crown, a fixed bridge, or even an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. The type of restoration you receive depends on the number of damaged or missing teeth you may have. We will discuss your options with you during your consultation appointment and then work in conjunction with the oral surgeons as a team to complete the implant process.

After we have determined the best course of action, we can begin the implant process, which is typically broken down into two or three appointments.

•  Surgery: During the first appointment, the oral surgeon will remove any damaged teeth if necessary and place the implant, and they will make a small incision in the gum tissues to expose the underlying bone. Next, a small hole is drilled into the bone to ensure the implant can be deeply embedded. After the implant is in place, the surgeon will suture the incision.

•  Healing: Over the next several months, the implant and your bone will undergo the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration allows the implant and bone to fuse together, and it creates a bond powerful enough to support a restoration.

•  Abutment: After osseointegration is complete, your oral surgeon will reopen the incision to expose the implant and place the abutment. The abutment links your restoration to the implant screw and provides additional support.

•  Restoration: Once the abutment is in place, Dr. Perkiomaki can begin work on your restoration. We will make an impression of the area and use to fabricate your crown, bridge, or fixed denture. This process may take several weeks to complete. In the meantime, we may give you a temporary restoration to protect the implant and restore your ability to chew. Once the restoration is complete, we will permanently bond it to the abutment.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Because an implant screw will bond to the jawbone, dental implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth. Your implant-supported restoration will look, feel, and function just like your remaining teeth. Many of our patients opt for implants because they offer superior aesthetics, comfort, and durability. In fact, under the proper care and maintenance, your implant could last for many decades—or even a lifetime!
