Why Titanium is Used for Dental Implants
When you are considering replacing missing teeth with dental implants, it’s a good idea to do some research on what dental implants are and how they can benefit you. At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC, we believe that our patients should be educated on the procedures that they will be undergoing, so that they can be properly prepared. One of the most frequent questions that we get about dental implants is, “Why do you use implant posts that are made out of titanium?” This is a great question and opens up the topic of dental implants to be explored more thoroughly.
Dental Implant BasicsDental implants are permanent tooth replacement options that can replace single teeth, multiple consecutive missing teeth, and full arches of missing teeth. Dental implants require a surgical procedure to be placed and are made up of three separate pieces.
Dental Implant PartsThe three different parts of a dental implant are the titanium implant post, the implant abutment, and the implant restoration. The titanium implant post is placed into the bone of your jaw during the surgical procedure and left to heal for anywhere from two-to-six months. Once the implant post has had time to heal, we can place the other two parts on top of it. The implant abutment screws into the top of the titanium implant post and simply provides surface area for us to attach the implant restoration. The implant restoration is the final part of the implant to be placed and is made to look just like your natural teeth.
Titanium for Dental ImplantsWe use titanium dental implant posts, because titanium is a bio-compatible material. When something is said to be bio-compatible, it just means that the human body typically does not try to reject that material. Normally, when something foreign is placed into our body, the body will respond to it by trying everything it can to get that thing out of the body.
The success of dental implants relies on successfully healing the bone of your jaw in a process known as osseointegration. Titanium is metal, strong and long lasting, which is a huge added benefit for dental implants. So, not only will the human body accept titanium, but it has some very desirable qualities that make it a winner when it comes to helping to replace missing teeth.
Titanium, Osseointegration, and ImplantsOsseointegration, or the process where the bone in your jaw heals around the titanium dental implant, is not a fast process. It can take anywhere from six weeks to six months for osseointegration to complete. We will asses how well your implants are healing before placing the implant abutment or the restorations to ensure that everything is progressing as it should be.
