At age 11, J.J. (Jukka) Perkiomaki left Finland to move with his family to Astoria, Oregon.

Restorative Dentistry
Portland, OR

Dental suite (operatory) at the Perkiomaki Dental OfficeRestorative Dentistry is about bringing your teeth back to health, back to their natural function after they have been damaged from decay. At your dental appointment we would first need to determine the extent of decay on the tooth and whether nearby teeth are also damaged. Dr. Perkiomaki can perform small procedures including fillings to crowns, and larger procedures including dentures and implants. We will help you restore your teeth, from beginning to end, giving you a healthy mouth that is strong and gives you confidence.

Restorative Dental Services

We can prevent dental issues, beautify your smile, and we can repair existing dental issues with the restorative dental services below:

•

Bridge

Dental bridges are designed to fill in the gap of a missing tooth. Each tooth is important to your health, when a tooth is missing it can cause other issues including teeth shifting and bone atrophy. We fill in this space with a fake tooth that is supported with anchors on the healthy teeth on either side of it.

A bridge is used to fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The restoration literally “bridges” the gap between two teeth. A pontic, or prosthetic tooth, is suspended just above the gum tissue by two abutment teeth. During the procedure, Dr. Perkiomaki will reshape the adjacent teeth to accommodate the two crowns that connect to the pontic.

•

Crown

Dental crowns strengthen a tooth that is weakened. If you are avoiding using a tooth, or a side of you mouth, we can help you. A dental crown is a more advanced restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth. During a minor procedure, your enamel is completely reshaped, and a tooth-shaped cap is placed over the tooth. Once the crown is properly fit, Dr. Perkiomaki will permanently cement it into place.

Crowns are used to treat teeth that are damaged, chipped, cracked, or severely decayed. Dr. Perkiomaki may recommend a crown if the damage is a threat to the structural integrity of the tooth. In many cases, a crown is the best way to avoid a tooth extraction. Much like fillings, crowns can be made from several materials, including porcelain, zirconia, gold, and amalgam.

•

Denture

Dental dentures are a prosthetic that is designed to give you the freedom of having functioning teeth when no healthy teeth are present. We want to give you the freedom of chewing and speaking with ease.

•

Filling

Tooth fillings are a common procedure. By clearing away the decay we can work to save your tooth. If left untreated, the harmful bacteria in your mouth will eat away at your enamel, and cause decay that leads to cavities. If you have a cavity, a dental filling is usually the first line of defense. Dental fillings can be used to treat cavities that range from small to large. In many cases, a filling can be made from tooth-colored materials, such as resin composite or porcelain, which offer an esthetically-pleasing alternative to other restorative materials. However, we may suggest an amalgam (silver) filling, depending on the size and severity of the cavity. Many patients prefer composite fillings because they are discrete and durable.

•

Implant

Dental Implants offer our patients with a strong permanent fake root structure which we can place a crown on top of. Implants are ideal for replacing a single or even all of your teeth, they are also used to provide anchors for full dentures and bridges.

Dental implants have revolutionized the way we restore missing teeth. During the procedure, a titanium screw is surgically implanted into your jaw. The screw mimics the root component of a prosthetic tooth and can be used to support a single crown, fixed bridge, or even an entire row of prosthetic teeth. Implant-supported restorations are superior to other alternatives in nearly every regard, including appearance, durability, stability, comfort, convenience, and other oral health benefits.

•

Inlays & Onlay

More involved than a standard fillings, Inlays are a lab produced filling for the inside of a tooth that is severely damaged, they do not encase the entire tooth like a crown, they encase part of the tooth. Onlays can spread over one tooth and onto the neighboring teeth as well, it is a lab created repair for the outside portion of one or multiple teeth.

•

Root Canal

Root canals relieve the pain of infection. This procedure is not something to fear, we take away the pain, not cause it.

•

Veneer

Porcelain teeth veneers are thin shells that fit over the surface of your anterior teeth. Veneers are a conservative alternative to crowns and primarily used to improve the cosmetics of teeth that are chipped, broken, discolored, or otherwise esthetically-displeasing. Veneers can also be used to close gaps or correct minor misalignments.

During the procedure, a small portion of the tooth is sanded down to accommodate the veneer. Next, the veneer is permanently bonded to the tooth using special cement. The most commonly used material for veneers is porcelain, because of its durability and superior esthetics.

Questions About Restorative Dentistry?

If you are interested in restorative dentistry, call (503) 292-8996, and schedule an appointment today! We all want to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. Although dental healthcare and patient education are more advanced than ever before, many people still experience tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral afflictions. Even those who practice excellent oral care at home can still find themselves in need of help.

As a general rule of thumb, professional dental treatment should take place about every six months. During a routine appointment, your teeth will be cleaned, and you will receive a full examination to help us prevent, diagnose, and plan treatment.

If you have teeth that are decayed, chipped, cracked, discolored, or even missing, we may recommend restorative dentistry. At J.J. Perkiomaki DMD PC, we offer a variety of restorative treatments to get your smile back on track!
