Root Canal
Portland - West haven - Sylvan

Root canals have earned a bad reputation, but they are a very valuable procedure. Since our goal at Dr. Perkiomaki's office is to help you save your natural teeth whenever possible, the root canal is a procedure, we like to turn to when there is an infection or decay that has settled into the pulp of your tooth. This enables us to remove the infection and/or decay and help you save your tooth. A root canal today is much more tolerable than ever in the past, thanks to today's advanced technology, making it the preferred method over a tooth extraction.

What is the Pulp of the Tooth?

Your tooth contains many parts. The only part you can see is the enamel. This is the part of the tooth that protects the interior in order to avoid pain from occurring when you eat or drink. Underneath the enamel is the dentin and pulp. The pulp is what initially helped your tooth to grow and become secure in your mouth. Once the tooth is fully grown, however, the pulp becomes unnecessary.

How Decay Occurs in the Roots

If you have tooth decay that goes untreated or manages to make its way into the grooves of your teeth, it can eat its way past the enamel and underneath your tooth.

When this occurs, the interior portion of your tooth is affected; namely the pulp. This can cause immense pain and make it difficult for you to eat. Unfortunately, when it gets to this point, we need to do something more drastic than just fill the tooth, as that would not take away the pain.

The Root Canal Procedure

A root canal is the best way to save your tooth. During this procedure, an opening is made in the affected tooth and the pulp of your tooth is completely removed. The remaining portion of the roots and the interior of the tooth is then cleaned with all evidence of decay and/or infection removed.

The area is then filled with a rubber material that will take the place of the pulp. This is to prevent any future decay from occurring in this area as well as a way to help you keep the remaining portion of your tooth that is healthy. In some cases, a dental crown is necessary to help strengthen the portion of the tooth that is left, giving you full function of the tooth once the process is complete.

Root canals are the restorative dental procedure choice of most patients because it allows you to keep your natural teeth despite decay. There is no substitute for your own teeth that will provide the level of function and aesthetically pleasing appearance that you desire. If you are able to save your natural tooth with a root canal, Dr. Perkiomaki highly recommends it as the procedure is not as painful or dramatic as many people remember it to be in the past.

If you have any questions or concerns about the root canal procedure and how it will affect you, please feel free to give us a call at (503) 292-8996 today!
