Dental implants are a three-part permanent tooth replacement option. Using dental implants we can replace single missing teeth, multiple missing teeth, even a full arch of missing teeth permanently. The first part of the dental implant is the titanium post, which is surgically placed into the bone of the jaw. Once the implant post is placed, it is left to heal. Once the bone in the jaw has healed around the implant post, we will place the implant abutment and the implant restoration on top of it. The result is a prosthetic tooth or teeth that looks and acts just like the real thing. The key to the magic behind dental implants is the healing process, which results in osseointegration.

What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the "trick" to the miracle behind dental implants. Dental implants give our patients the ability to eat and speak exactly as they did before tooth loss. They don’t have to worry about taking dentures out to clean them or while they sleep. They don’t have to worry about their dentures becoming ill-fitting or uncomfortable. Dental implants even give our patients the ability to eat whatever they would like without having to worry about limitations. The key to all of this is osseointegration. Osseointegration forms a strong bond between the bone in your jaw and the dental implant post. Because of this incredible bond, the foundation for your new dental implants will be mechanically solid, just like they were with your natural teeth.

How Does Osseointegration Work?

Osseointegration works due to the biocompatibility of titanium and other biocompatible dental implant materials.Osseointegration is what occurs following the placement of the titanium dental implant post. Osseointegration is the healing process for the bone in your jaw and how it heals around the titanium implant post. When we surgically place the implant post into your jaw, we usually use a post that is made out of titanium because titanium is a biocompatible material. Things that are biocompatible are usually accepted by the human body, meaning your body will not try to reject the implant post. Once the post has been surgically placed into the bone of your jaw, the bone will begin to heal around it—this is osseointegration.

How Long Does Osseointegration Take?

Bone takes quite a bit of time to heal when compared to soft tissues, so instead of a few weeks to fully recover, usually, osseointegration can take a few months. Depending on your oral health and how many implants are placed, healing time can take between six weeks and six months.
