Preventive Dental Services

Prevention is the first step in dental care. We want to help and teach you to care for your teeth so that they can last you a lifetime. Our office provides several services in Preventative Care, including:

Dental Cleanings with our Hygienist

At this appointment our hygienist will clean your teeth by removing plaque, tartar and surface stains. The American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least every six months. Cleanings are performed to help prevent the formation of oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease. With cleanings, we can help you eliminate buildup from all surfaces of your teeth, including the ones you may not be able to thoroughly clean yourself.

Dental Examinations

Generally scheduled with you cleaning appointment, exams allow our dentist, Dr. Perkiomaki, to look for any hidden and visual problems. Exams are performed so that we can detect the presence of oral health issues in their earliest stages. We are then able to provide you with the necessary treatments you need to prevent them from worsening. The American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth professionally cleaned and examined at least every six months.

Deep Cleaning Gum Treatment

Deep cleaning gum treatment is recommended when signs of an unhealthy periodontium or gum disease is present.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer is a serious disease that affects over 40,000 Americans every year. If not found, and treated, in its early stages, oral cancer can be fatal. One of the biggest issues, however, is that these early stages are difficult to detect. Most people are unaware that there is a problem until after cancer has progressed. Regular oral cancer screenings, which are performed during your dental exams, allow for the detection of early warning signs, helping you to get the treatment you need to prevent more serious complications from occurring.

Oral Hygiene

Taking care of your mouth is crucial for preventing serious oral health issues. The ADA recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once daily. These practices are essential for preventing the buildup of plaque and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. While these habits are important, it is also important that you do them properly. Neglecting your oral hygiene, or skipping any part of your routine, can significantly increase your risk of developing major problems.

Sealants are a thin coating of plastic that is painted onto the back molars and serve as a barrier between your tooth and bacteria. Sealants significantly lower the incidence of cavities and decay. This is especially necessary in children and adults who have deep grooves in their teeth. The chewing surfaces of your molars contain deep grooves that can easily trap food particles and bacteria. These areas are also often difficult to thoroughly clean with regular brushing, increasing your risk for cavities. Sealants are a painless application that effectively covers over these crevices, preventing buildup and making your teeth easier to maintain.

Preventive Dental Technology

Diagnodent Fluorescent Laser

Typically, cavities are found through a visual inspection of your teeth. X-rays can also be helpful in detecting the presence of cavities between your teeth. However, sometimes, cavities develop under the surface of the enamel, where they cannot be detected by these methods. A Diagnodent Fluorescent laser is a key tool for finding these cavities, allowing for fast, effective treatment. The laser emits a harmless fluorescent light into your mouth that shows the smallest amount of hidden decay within your teeth. The laser is completely safe and can be used at every dental exam in conjunction with other cavity detection methods.

Intraoral Camera

An intraoral camera is a tool that provides us with an alternative to a traditional dental mirror. This small, handheld camera is moved around inside of your mouth, displaying the images in real time on a computer monitor. In addition to allowing us to more easily see the structures in your mouth as we look them over, the camera also takes still images. We can then use specialized software to zoom in on certain areas for an even closer look. This allows us to see the smallest details in your mouth that we might never have been able to see before.

Digital X-Rays

X-rays are an important part of your oral care record. They allow us to see the hidden structures of your mouth, such as between the teeth, the roots of your teeth, and your jawbone. These images help us to detect hidden issues such as early root damage, bone loss, impacted teeth, and more. Today, we use digital X-ray technology. Rather than radiation, digital X-rays use electronics. Your images are visible right away, without the need to develop them. Not only is your entire appointment spent with you, but your exposure to radiation is reduced up to 95%.
